RESUMO

Crop-pollinator interactions are essential for world food security. Studying crop pollination from a network approach allows identification of target pollinators for conservation and management, and gaps in our knowledge. Solanaceae represents the third highest ranked family based on economic value, and its production is highly improved by animal pollination. This study aimed to integrate global data on solanaceous crop pollination and analyse the interaction patterns using a meta-network approach. Our questions were: (i) how are interactions structured and what are the structuring roles of species; and (ii) what are the main gaps in our knowledge? Data were obtained through a systematic review of the main scientific databases. The network structure was described using connectivity and modularity calculations, and the role of species using centrality metrics. The 251 pollinator species reported were in seven orders, mainly Hymenoptera (84.9%). The generalists Bombus and Apis species were the most common pollinators. The meta-network was modular, and all modules mostly included bees. Most species were peripherals, around 12% were connectors, and there were no module hubs. Apis mellifera was the only network hub (supergeneralist). The most important pollinators are the most managed pollinators worldwide; however, many native species play a role in structuring the meta-network. Main gaps include species of importance to pepper pollination, lack of species-specific identification, and the need for more robust experimental studies evaluating the pollination efficiency of native, manageable bees.

As vantagens dos animais transgênicos têm sido demonstradas em diferentes aplicações, entretanto muitas metodologias usadas para gerar animais geneticamente modificados (GM) apresentam baixas taxas de eficiência. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a entrega dos vetores lentivirais (VLs) em zigotos durante a fertilização in vitro (FIV), para gerar embriões GM, com o gene da proteína verde fluorescente (GFP) ou do fator IX de coagulação humana (FIX). Vetores lentivirais com os genes GFP (pLGW-GFP-LV) ou FIX (pLWE2-FIX-LV) foram utilizados na FIV ou na cultura de embriões in vitro (CIV). A coincubação de pLWE2-FIX-LV com espermatozoides e complexos oócitos-células do cumulus (COCs) durante a FIV diminuiu (P<0,05) as taxas de clivagem e de blastocistos, enquanto com pLGW-GFP-LV diminuiu (P<0,05) a taxa de blastocisto quando se comparou ao controle sem VL. A coincubação de pLWE2-FIX-LV e pLGW-GFP-LV com presumíveis zigotos durante a CIV não afetou (P>0,05) o desenvolvimento embrionário. A expressão da proteína GFP não foi detectada em embriões após a coincubação de FIV ou CIV, embora as células do cumulus expressassem a proteína até o dia oito de cultivo in vitro. Reações em cadeia da polimerase (PCR) não detectaram os genes GFP ou FIX em embriões, mas ambos foram detectados em células do cumulus. Assim, a coincubação de VL com espermatozoide bovino e COCs não é eficaz para produzir embriões geneticamente modificados por meio de FIV.(AU)

Abstract The present study aimed at describing and evaluating the fauna of Anisakidae and Raphidacarididae nematodes of lutjanid fish (snappers) from the Brazilian northeastern coast unloaded at the city of Aracaju, capital of the State of Sergipe. A total of 186 lutjanids of 5 different species were analyzed including 69 Lutjanus analis, 51 L. vivanus , 29 Ocyurus chrysurus, 23 L. synagris, and 14 L. jocu. Nematode specimens found in the viscera of these fish were clarified with lactophenol. Illustrations of each of these specimens were prepared to help identify these samples and compose their taxonomic description and classification. At necropsy, 3,183 nematodes belonging to two families were collected from fish viscera which included the following: Anisakidae: Anisakis, Terranova , Contracaecum, and Goezia; Raphidascarididae: Raphidascaris (Ichthyascaris) and Hysterothylacium . A total of six genera of nematodes were found at postmortem examination of which adult worms of only three genera (Goezia, Raphidascaris and Hysterothylacium) were detected in the fish examined. Larvae of Terranova sp. were found only in the musculature of O. chrysurus . Most of the nematode larvae were present in the mesentery and organs of the fish necropsied. Therefore, the zoonotic potential of these nematodes cannot be ruled out. There was a significant negative correlation between the intensity of parasitism by anisakids and the total body length of O. chrysurus; the intensity of parasitism was greater in smaller and shortef fish. There was a significant positive correlation between the abundance of these parasites and the length of L. synagris; the presence of these parasites increased according to the fish's body length. To the authors' knowledge, these are the first records of Raphidascaris (Ichthyascaris ) sp. and Hysterothylacium sp. in L. vivanus , of Terranova sp. in O. chrysurus and L. jocu, and of Goezia sp. in L. analis. These novel findings add the Brazilian northeast coast and the State of Sergipe in the geographic distribution of these parasites in the country.


Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho é descrever e avaliar a fauna de Anisakidae e Raphidacarididae de peixes lutjanídeos do litoral nordeste do Brasil desembarcados na cidade de Aracaju, capital do estado de Sergipe. Foram analisados 186 lutjanídeos das espécies Lutjanus analis 69, L. vivanus 51, Ocyurus chrysurus 29, L. synagris 23 e L. jocu 14. Exemplares dos nematodas encontrados nas vísceras foram clarificados em lactofenol e ilustrados para auxiliar na identificação e compor a descrição taxonõmica. Foram coletados 3.183 nematodas das vísceras dos peixes, pertencentes a duas famílias: Anisakidae: Anisakis, Terranova, Contracaecum e Goezia; e Raphidascarididae: Raphidascaris (Ichthyascaris) e Hysterothylacium. Totalizando seis gêneros encontrados, apenas nos três últimos gêneros foram encontrados vermes em estágio adulto. Apenas em O. chrysurus foram encontradas larvas de Terranova sp. na musculatura. A maioria das larvas estava restrita ao mesentério e órgãos dos peixes, e em grande intensidade não podendo se descartar o potencial zoonótico. Observou-se uma correlação significativa negativa entre a intensidade anisakídeos e o comprimento total de O. chrysurus, onde a intensidade dos parasitas é maior em peixes de menor comprimento e uma correlação significativa positiva entre a abundância desses mesmos parasitos com o comprimento de L. synagris, onde a presença dos parasitas aumenta conforme o comprimento do peixe. Esse é o primeiro registro de Raphidascaris ( Ichthyascaris) sp. e Hysterothylacium sp. em L. vivanus ; de Terranova sp. em O. chrysurus e L. jocu e Goezia sp. em L. analis, adicionando o litoral nordeste do Brasil e o estado de Sergipe na distribuição geográfica desses parasitos.

Sera from 269 rodents obtained during the routine surveillance operations in plague areas of Rio de Janeiro and Pernambuco states, Brazil were tested by ELISA for specific IgG antibodies against a recombinant nucleocapsid (N) protein of Araraquara hantavirus. ELISA-positive sera were submitted to reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for amplification of the virus genome and later sequencing for identification of the viral variant. The samples from the state of Pernambuco were antibody negative, and although four from Rio de Janeiro were ELISA-positive, they failed to yield viral cDNA by RT-PCR. This is the first report of the presence of antibodies to a hantavirus among rodents from Rio de Janeiro and suggests the possibility of human cases of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) in that state, although no case has yet been reported.

The prevalence of Clinostomum complanatum Rudolphi, 1814 (Digenea, Clinostomidae) in fishes Loricariichthys platymetopon, Parauchenipterus galeatus and Hoplosternum littorale, which are second intermediate hosts, was studied at the floodplain of the high Paraná River, Brazil. Season (alternation flood-drought), habitat (lentic and semi-lotic), and sex were not related to its prevalence. For L. platymetopon, the immature and smaller fish had the lowest prevalence, whilst the opposite was observed for P. galeatus and H. littorale. This suggests that the probability of being predated is unchanged by parasitism for L. platymetopon; thus, a cumulative effect of repeated infections is observed; for the two other species, the highest parasitised fish may have higher predation mortality rates. While H. littorale is the preferred item in birds' diet, L. platymetopon is the most abundant fish species and has the highest C. complanatum prevalence, which makes it the most likely path of transmission to the bird, the definitive hosts of C. complanatum.

RESUMO

The attachment of Clinostomum sp. to the oesophagus of the bird definitive host Ardea cocoi is reported. The parasite attaches to the mucous layer of the oesophagus by the acetabulum, oral sucker, and oral collar. The mucous layer of the oesophagus engulfed by the oral sucker presents an intense liquefactive necrosis, and the engulfment is not likely to contribute significantly to the attachment of the parasite. The oral collar of the parasite, surrounding the oral sucker, is juxtaposed to the oesophagus mucous layer, showing a perfect fitting of both surfaces. It is concluded that the main attachment mechanism of the parasites to the oesophagus of the host is provided by the acetabulum and by the juxtaposition of the oral collar of the parasites to the oesophagus host surface.

The life cycle of the digenetic trematode Clinostomum complanatum was studied on the floodplain of the high Paraná river, Brazil. Sampling was done between June 1999 and June 2000. The mollusc Biomphalaria peregrina was the first intermediate host with a prevalence of infection of 0.75%. The fish Loricariichthys platymetopon, Hoplosternum littorale, Parauchenipterus galeatus, Hoplias malabaricus and Loricaria sp. were second intermediate hosts, with the prevalence varying from 2.45% ( H. malabaricus) to 60.8% ( L. platymetopon). The birds Ardea cocoi, Phalacrocorax brasilianus, Egretta alba and Egretta thula were definitive hosts, with the prevalence ranging between 5.5% ( E. thula) and 95% ( A. cocoi). The high prevalences in birds, especially in A. cocoi, suggest some kind of mechanism facilitating the predation of infected fish. The importance of the various hosts is discussed, and it is concluded that the floodplain of the high Paraná river has suitable conditions for the maintenance of the life cycle of C. complanatum.

Alcohol which, at first, is part of great ceremonies, parties, get-togethers, is now becoming an important issue, for the number of women who consume alcoholic beverages has increased, and consequently the number of pregnant women, considering that not only the mother's body but also the one of the child that is being formed, are under metabolic changes, and inevitably will be a target for acquired alcohol alterations (intake). During the human development, it is important to take into consideration the pregnancy stage and depending on it, the individual becomes susceptible to teratogenic agents. This paper aims at providing some contribution related to this social issue bringing knowledge on the action of alcohol on the fetus alterations, from the slightest (irritability, lack of attention, mobility deficiency) until Fetal Alcoholic Syndrome (F.A.S.) and also tries to analyse the extent of people knowledge on the consequences of alcohol effects over pregnant women bodies and the possible changes that may occur with the fetus. In order to make this study possible, interviews have been made by the use of forms with a population sample of about 100 people living in the northern, western, southern and interior low land regions. We have also visited some public and private institutions (23) on those regions, interviewing nurses in paediatric wards, aiming at identifying the difficulties found related to the diagnosis and management towards F.A.S.

RESUMO

A 46,XY/47,XXY mosaic has been observed in a male aged 30, with hypogonadism bilateral gynecomastia, small testes and aspermatogenesis. The banding techniques and computer analysis employde in this work. 200 metaphase plates were scanned and printed by Leitz Miamed Metaphase Finding System. Sex chromatin preparations were made from buccal smears and peripheral blood neutrophils. The chromosomes were classified according to the International System for Human Cytogenetic Nomenclature
